The Nito.Async socket classes do not require any particular protocol.

The lower-level classes (IAsyncTcpConnection) treat the socket data as streams, just like the Socket class.

The "simple" classes (ISimpleAsyncTcpConnection) do define a message framing system with keepalives, but they do not define any messages.

You can send any message you want over either of these. See the "chat" sample applications for a simple approach that just uses BinaryFormatter to send Serializable objects over the connection.
